Training cum demonstration Programme on Scientific Beekeeping for the Tribal Farmers of Meghalaya

        A one day training cum demonstration programme on “Scientific Beekeeping for the Tribal Farmers of Meghalaya” was organized by the Division of Crop Science on 11th March, 2025, at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP). A total of 22 participants from two different villages (Umramblei and Byrwa) under RiBhoi district of Meghalaya participated in the programme. Dr. Sandip Patra, Senior Scientist (Agricultural Entomology), Division of Crop Science, gave the welcome address and highlighted the importance of scientific beekeeping. Dr. Rumki Ch. Sangma, delivered lecture on species of honey bees, pests and diseases of honey bees and floral sources in Meghalaya for honey bees. Dr. Khrieketou Kuotsu demonstrated on the types of scientific bee box, management of scientific beekeeping, equipments and use of its accessories. An interaction among scientists and beekeepers was also held, where the queries of the beekeepers were answered by the scientists. Dr. Pankaj Baiswar, Head, Division of Crop Science highlighted the importance of scientific beekeeping for livelihood improvement and encouraged the beekeepers to become entrepreneurs on beekeeping and honey business. The scientific beekeeping tools (modern bee hive-44 no., excluder sheet-44 no., bee veil-22 no., hand glove-22 no., knife-22 no., smoker-22 no., and extractor-4 no.) were also distributed to the participants. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Sandip Patra, Dr. Rumki H. Ch. Sangma, Dr. Hammylliende Talang and Dr. Pankaj Baiswar of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. The coordinators are grateful to Dr. S. Hazarika, PS and Nodal officer, TSP, for funding the programme and also to the technical, YP and contractual staff of Entomology, DCS, for assisting the programme.
